Recently I decided I wanted to make a bread. When I check the yeast, I found that the expiration date had expired. As I had rarely used it and it was stored in the refrigerator, I figured it and was hoping it was still good. I needed a way to check to test the yeast to see if it was still active. I had to try it twice. I believe the first time, the water I used was not warm enough. The real test of course is when I used it to actually bake a bread...and it worked there too!
How to Test Yeast
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoon yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
Directions:
1) In a small bowl, add 1/2 cup of warm to hot tap water.
2) Add yeast and sugar. Stir.
3) If the yeast is still active, you should see foam and bubbles forming on top after about 10 minutes.
